History
Puducherry State AIDS Cell was first formed in 1992 as “State AIDS Cell”. As per the guidelines of NACO, Pondicherry AIDS Control Society (PACS) was formed and registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 with the Registrar of Firms on 31st March 1994 (No. 101 of 1994).
The Society is functioning under the Chairmanship of Secretary to Govt. (Health) and Director of Health & Family Welfare Services as Vice Chairman and the Project Director as Member Secretary. PACS is functioning from the Financial Year 1994-95 onwards and is implementing various programmes formulated by NACO. Puducherry is included in the low Prevalence State based on the Sentinel Survey.
Objectives of National AIDS Control Program (NACP)
- NACP – Phase I (1994-1999) : Prevention of spread of HIV in the country
- NACP – Phase II (1999-2006) : Reduce the spread of HIV infection and to strengthen capacity to respond to HIV epidemic in the long-term basis
- NACP- Phase III (2007-2012) : Halt and reverse the epidemic
- NACP – Phase IV (2012-2017) : Accelerate the process of reversal and to strengthen the epidemic Response through a cautious and well defined integration process.
- NACP- Phase V (2021-2026) : Strategy Document National AIDS and STD Control Programme.
